Scandinavian Desserts Suit U.S. Sweet Tooth

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo book series isn’t the only Scandinavian import to take the nation by storm these days. Scandinavian sweets, which have long been widely available in Midwestern states where lots of people are of Scandinavian descent, are becoming popular in big cities like Los Angeles and New York, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Scandinavian sweets are resonating with Americans’ tastes right now because they feature natural ingredients and small portions. Many Scandinavians have sweets after almost every meal, but because the products are healthier than many U.S. sweets, they are less likely to cause weight gain. (Scandinavians also have a very active lifestyle.)

The Journal says everything from Scandinavian ice cream to candy to danishes (much different than what we Americans think of as “danish”) are becoming popular. The intrigue of a new culture in cities that are suffused with Asian, Italian and Mexican eateries is part of the appeal.
